In 2012-2013 there were 98,962 students enrolled in higher education in the Montpellier Académie (4.2% of all students nationally), putting the region in third place nationally for number of students as a percentage of the total population. Students in the region are mainly at the 4 universities, 39 higher education institutions, 23 post-baccalaureate colleges and 5 non-university engineering schools. In 2012-2013 there were 8,949 foreign students studying at the universities in the Montpellier Académie. They account for 12.7% of the total student population in universities outside Paris (mainland France: 11.5%).

The 98,962 students enrolled in higher education in 2012-2013 are distributed among sites throughout the whole region, but the main concentrations are at three centres associated with the main cities:

1) Montpellier: 69,293 students, 70% of the region's students
2) Nîmes: 10,397 students, 10.5% of the region's students
3) Perpignan: 9,015 students, 9.1% of the region's students

On the strength of experience with interuniversity schemes already set up, the ComUE Languedoc-Roussillon Universités, its partners and the other higher education and research institutions concerned want an ambitious project and a genuine regional strategy for education to be at the heart of the policy for the site (at the same time, the members of the ComUE Languedoc-Roussillon Universités will be transposing this project and this ambition into their own site contract). A diverse, innovative, visible and attractive academic course offering for 2015-2019 will foster the success and improve the job prospects of graduates throughout the area.
